One of the most memorable experiences of your life is giving birth to your child. At O’Connor Hospital’s Family Center, our specially trained nurses and physicians provide support, warmth and expertise before, during, and after delivery.
Our Family Center team brings more than 3,000 babies into the world each year and provides continuing care throughout childhood. Our obstetricians and gynecologists, pediatricians and family medicine support team provide skilled care for all women and their families.
At O’Connor, you’ll receive expert medical guidance to ensure that you have the healthiest pregnancy possible and that your newborn receives the highest quality care. We are designated as a Level III Community Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), which means that we have the expertise and advanced equipment available 24/7, for whatever birth situation arises.

- Universal screening for all infants for jaundice (condition caused by a buildup of bilirubin, a yellow chemical produced by the breakdown of red blood cells)

New Mom’s Support Group
This no-cost, drop-in support group is an open forum that gives hands-on help and answers any questions regarding newborn care or breastfeeding. The group is facilitated by a staff member from our Lactation Department and has been designed to promote and extend the excellence in care that O’Connor provides for new mothers and their babies.
This group meets every Monday (except public holidays) from 11:00AM – 12:30PM in the Pediatric Conference room, located in the Mother and Baby Unit on the third floor of O’Connor Hospital. For any additional questions, please call (408) 947-2743. We look forward to assisting you and your baby.

Childbirth Preparation Class (Weekday or Weekend)
This three-part weekday or weekend series is designed to provide the woman and her support person with information on pregnancy changes, as well as signs, symptoms and stages of labor. Lamaze breathing and relaxation techniques are included. Classes meet on three Tuesday evenings or one Saturday and Sunday.
Saturday Childbirth Preparation (One-Day Express Class)
This eight-hour class is designed for the woman and her support person who want to receive the childbirth information in one day. The class content is the same as the three-week series (see above). A $10 meal voucher is included.
This three-hour prenatal class provides the essential information couples need to get off to a successful start with breastfeeding. Topics include strategies for dealing with common issues that new moms face.
Infant Care Class
This class is designed for expectant parents and other caregivers. Basic infant care is discussed as well as SIDS precautions. Weeknight and Saturday classes offered.
Infant & Child CPR Class
This class provides instruction of infant and child CPR with a two-year certification option. Relief of foreign body airway obstruction (choking) and safety measures are discussed. Weeknight classes offered.
Cost: $40/person or $75/couple.
New Mom’s Support Group
This drop-in support group provides hands-on help and answers questions about newborn care and breastfeeding. Group is open to all new moms. The group meets every Monday, except public holidays from 11 AM to 12:30 PM

Tours of the Maternity Unit are given once each week during the evening and one weekday afternoon a month. Reservations required. Call (800) 220-0182.
