St. Francis Medical Center Laboratory Awarded Accreditation from College of American Pathologists

Nov 15, 2019 | St. Francis News

The Accreditation Committee of the College of American Pathologists (CAP) has awarded accreditation to the Laboratory of St. Francis Medical Center (SFMC), based on results of a recent on-site inspection as part of the CAP’s Accreditation Programs.

SFMC’s Laboratory Medical Director, Gary N. Garshfield, MD, was advised of this national recognition and was congratulated for the excellence of the laboratory services being provided.  This includes hematology, chemistry, microbiology, pathology and blood bank.  The Laboratory supports SFMC’s full array of health care services ranging from trauma, surgery, stroke, STEMI, and cardiovascular to maternal-child health, orthopedics and wound care.

Dr. Garshfield said, “We are very proud of our CAP accreditation.  Laboratory medicine and technology is ever evolving, and this demonstrates our commitment to accuracy, efficiency, and employing best practices so that we can support doctors and patients in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.”

The U.S. federal government recognizes the CAP Laboratory Accreditation Program, begun in the early 1960s, as being equal to or more stringent than the government’s own inspection program.

The CAP accreditation process is designed to ensure the highest standard of care for all laboratory patients.  Inspectors examine the Laboratory’s records and quality control of procedures for the preceding two years.  CAP inspectors also examine Laboratory staff qualifications, equipment, facilities, its safety program and record and overall management.

St. Francis Medical Center’s Chief Nursing Officer Derek S. Drake, DNP, RN, NE-BC, CNML, CNL, commended the staff upon this achievement.  He said, “Receiving CAP accreditation further affirms the high quality and safety standards of our Laboratory.  Our dedicated team of highly qualified lab professionals knows that every specimen and culture represents a patient in our care, so they perform every test with the greatest of care.”

St. Francis Medical Center’s Laboratory is one of more than 8,000 CAP-accredited facilities worldwide.
