St. Francis Launches Alzheimer’s Support Group

Feb 18, 2020 | St. Francis News

As part of St. Francis Medical Center’s Living Well, Healthy Future program, a collaboration with USC Memory and Aging Center Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center and Rancho Los Amigos/USC California Alzheimer’s Disease Center, the hospital is hosting a new Alzheimer’s Support Group for the community. Offered in English and Spanish, the sessions are held the last Tuesday of every month from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in Conference Rooms 1151 (English) and 1155 (Spanish). The groups are open to people caring for someone with Alzheimer’s Disease or other dementia. They are led by practitioners specializing in these types of cognitive disorders.

The sessions give caregivers the opportunity to share their experiences. Through interactive support, participants learn from one another while gaining insights into their own situations and the reassurance that they are not alone. Former caregivers are also encouraged to attend. By sharing their past experiences and how they handled certain issues, they can provide valuable information to current caregivers facing similar challenges.

Alzheimer’s is a type of dementia causing progressive memory loss and other cognitive disabilities. It primarily afflicts those 65 years and older but can affect younger people as well. It is estimated that 5.8 million Americans live with Alzheimer’s Disease. According to the Alzheimer’s Association, approximately 16 million people in the U.S. are caring for loved ones with Alzheimer’s, and in 2019, they provided 18.5 billion hours of unpaid care and assistance. We understand that the responsibility can be daunting, and we know every person’s circumstance is unique. Sharing your experience can help you and others.

If you are interested in attending or know someone who could benefit from our support group, please contact Gilda Acosta Gonzalez, SFMC Director of Healthy Community Initiatives/Volunteer Services/Senior Circle, at (310) 900-7338 or GildaGonzalez@verity.org. Parking will be validated for community participants.
