First Diabetes Care and Management Symposium


On November 8, St. Vincent presented its first Diabetes Care and Management Symposium in Seton Hall. November was National Diabetes Awareness Month and St. Vincent took the opportunity to bring attention to diabetes and its impact on millions of Americans.

The presenters for the symposium were Dr. Tatia Sams, MD, SVMC Endocrinology; Dr. Mariola Ficinski, MD Endocrinology; Lilian Gramajo, RN, CDE, City of Hope National Medical Center; Dr. Juan Frias, MD, Endocrinology, National Research Institute Management; Yoon Hee Kim, Pharm. D.; and Maria Lourdes Hernandez, RD.

During the symposium, the participants obtained further knowledge pertaining to the functional changes involved in diabetes; defining Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes; and understanding the management and prevention of diabetes. The various presenters spoke about the current treatment of patients with hyperglycemia in the inpatient setting that includes transplant patients; learning the current and upcoming injectable therapies for Type 2 diabetes; managing patients with diabetes in the hospital; and obtaining knowledge on providing diabetes education.
